3 familys were suppose to get 2 bins, 1&2 families were supposed to get 1 bin.

I got 2 more bins than I was supposed to .   Just curious if anyone else got too many?

Are you sure you didn't accidentally take a neighbor's? Or is your house configured in such a way that somebody might have been confused by how many units there are? Write down all the numbers and call 311. Supposedly the City knows which bins go with which address.

This happened to us as well - we got 3 bins when we're supposed to have 2. The city delivered the bins by putting them on the corner of the driveway so it was unclear if they belonged to the neighbor or us. I just called 311 and they said the the landlord had to be the one to call... grrr....

Wasnt the top of your bin labeled? Our bins came with numbers on the top.

It came with generic labeling numbers, but not the house numbers.

I received one too many, as well. And they didn't take my old blue bins, so I'm not sure what to do with those, either.

Did you leave your old bins out with the normal recycling? I think that's how they're dealing with the old bins if folks don't want to keep them (I like using them to collect and hold things for recycling inside my house, then carry them out to the large curb-side bin), rather than having the drop-off also be a pick-up.

Yes, I did, but they weren't collected. As Ron says, though, I'm sure I can find a use for them.

We had 2 bins and we kept one and recycled the other (it was cracked). I just stuck it inside the new recycling bin and it disappeared.

If you put them out empty next week, the city is supposed to pick them up and recycle them. (But it would be better for you to find another use for them, or a neighbor or friend who can use them, such as this person.)

From the FAQ on the city's website:

"Q. What do I do with my old recycling bin?
A. you can use the bin to keep recycled materials in your house and then carry them to the new cart. Of you can place it at the curb on your recycling day and it will be picked up and recycled."

Or you can can make a hat or a brooch or a pterodactyl...

At some point, they increased the number of bins to go to 2-family homes to 2 each.

Oh! That explains how we got two.

If your house has anything resembling an attached storefront, you'll get more.

We are a two-family that got two bins. Seems excessive, I don't think we'll ever fill up both in a week unless we have a giant, raging party with hundreds of beer bottles (unlikely)

I was initially annoyed at the prospect of having TWO big bins to move around the driveway when I use the snowblower this winter... but our two family filled 1.5 of them during the first week. Collapsing but not slicing cardboard boxes up into 2'x2' sections is a big win, but it takes up a good deal of room if you order just about everything from Amazon, as I do.

We filled our whole bin and only had one trash bag last week! It is totally possible to fill it and not with beer bottles ;)

I would far and away prefer too many to too few, especially as I figure that improper recycling presentation will be a fineable offense sometime in the nearish future, similar how putting your trash out wrong is now.

And yeah, they changed it to 2-family houses getting 2 bins.

(Most of my corrugated board is gone! I could just never be arsed to cut it to 2' squares and to tie it up. The stack was getting _huge_.)

Are the bins fully distributed throughout the city yet? I live in Ward 2 [Union Square] and we haven't gotten ours so far.

We got 2 bins for a 2-family as well. We filled them both last week, thanks to hoarding all our cardboard boxes from moving last month.

Relatedly, an abandoned house ("unfit for human occupancy") on our street got 3 bins. Perhaps I should call 311 about that...
