My guess is that for Christmas they'll give us promises that the T will be back to normal Any Day Now...

The Science Park Green Line work finished ahead of schedule, so the Lechmere -North Station part of the Green Line will be back in service on November 5.

They're thoughtfully providing us the same ability to gripe about crappy public transit as all those other cities.

I grew up with Chicago's CTA and I don't remember nearly as much to complain about...

I had dared to hope that for Christmas they'd give it a rest and let me get to FCS on the red line.

Glad to hear this; it will help getting into Boston on weekends when the Red Line stations north of Harvard are closed. (During the closure I wish they'd run the #85 bus on weekends; that would help getting Red Line connection.)

Actually, they're planning to have normal Red Line service on Christmas and New Year's weekends.

Chicago is one of only two places in the US that has arguably world-class public transit (NYC is the other). Places like San Francisco and Boston are at the top of a second tier, but it's definitely a second tier.

I'd probably place NYC in a tier by itself, along with cities like London, Paris, Tokyo, maybe Madrid. Places where the trains form an actual network, not hub-and-spoke. NYC's also the only one where trains run 24 hours, though parts of Chicago do too. Duplicate track allowing maintenance, I think. Then Chicago, then Boston/SF in different ways, yeah -- SF has a much better bus network, Boston nicer trains when they work.

This weekend's bustitution between Kendall and Broadway is due to elevator construction at Park Street (presumably due to the narrowness of the center red line platform at Park Street, the elevator work had to foul the tracks, which necessitates turning off third rail power) and is unrelated to the bustitution Harvard-Alewife that will begin next weekend and go all winter. In my opinion, when the T's management saw this weekend's weather forecast, they should have rescheduled this work for another weekend (and had the red line run normal service this weekend).

San Francisco's public transit is, IMO, crap. Which still makes it better than most US cities, but nowhere near Boston, NYC, Portland, Minneapolis, Chicago, Philly.

what's so bad about San Francisco's Muni and Bart systems?

BART's great if you happen to be coming from and going to some of the relatively few locations BART stops, but that leaves a *lot* out. BART has about 45 stops, whereas the T has about 145 stops in a metro area of less than half the size. You can really feel that difference.

Muni, on the other hand, is so slow and unreliable and poorly scheduled that I've been frustrated every single one of the few times I've tried to take it anywhere, and I know people in SF who bought cars specifically because they were fed up with muni.
