Tom Lincoln -- a very active citizen who founded the recycling program, spearheaded the restoration of the Brooks Estate, and ran for office a while back -- forwarded the following news of the Middlesex Fellsway to me. The Fells is in danger from a nascent local development, the Langwood Commons, and needs your support.

Please help PREVENT A DISASTER
in your neighborhood and the Middlesex Fells
HELP STOP LANGWOOD COMMONS!

The Threat: There is a proposal for a huge new development (“Langwood Commons”) at the former BRMC (hospital) site on Woodland Road in Stoneham.

This development would:

  • Generate 7,000 more vehicle trips every day on Fells roads and your local streets
  • Turn historic parkways into superhighways and local streets into clogged arteries
  • Cut the heart out of your Middlesex Fells
  • Threaten the water quality in Spot Pond
  • Have a terrible impact on our quality of life. . .

Right now, this proposal is before the Stoneham Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA).

Please save our neighborhoods and the Middlesex Fells!

Here’s how to help:

  1. Fill out a Citizen Affidavit and send it to us by May 9. (just check the boxes that express your opinion: additional comments may be added on the back of the form) Please make copies and get your neighbors to fill it out, too, if you can.
  2. Come to the next public meeting in Stoneham on May 12 (Stoneham Town Hall, 35 Central Street, Stoneham, 7:30 p.m.) to express your opinion.
  3. Make a donation to help cover our costs — we have the truth, but we are facing a wealthy developer. Donations in any amount are welcome:
Friends of the Fells / Defense Fund,
    4 Woodland Rd.
    Stoneham, MA 02180

For more info or to volunteer to help: go to www.fells.org, send an e-mail
to: friends@fells.org or savemedfordfells@comcast.net or call (781) 662-2340

Supporters of the Fells need all the help they can get. If you believe in this cause, be sure and attend the meeting at Stoneham Town Hall on 12 May. In the meantime, the most immediate thing you can do is send a Citizen Affadavit to the address listed.
