two entirely unrelated questions!

a. is anyone still selling 2012 wall calendars? and am i the only person who waited this long to buy one?

b. are there any places to eat/drink that are open twenty-four hours, or that open realllllly early, say 4:00 or 5:00 in the am? (this is kind of research for a story i'm writing in which one of the main characters works the overnight shift and sometimes wants to get something to eat with his coworkers after work and before going home. it can be pretty much anywhere in greater boston.)

a. Based on past experience, I'd try the Coop, Harvard Book Store, and Bob Slate, all in Harvard Square.

b. South Street Diner in Boston. Also IHOP on Soldiers Field Road in Brighton.

I'm surprised, as the Coop usually has calendars in the way-back section next to Palmer Street, for months after the New Year, with steadily increasing discounts.

Just to be clear, I'm referring to the back of the main book building, not to the other Coop buildings across Palmer Street. Also, I haven't been back there to check this year, so my information may be totally out of date.

ETA 1/12/12: I stopped by there this evening, and the remaining selection (all 50% off) is pretty paltry. It's all on a single table now, and includes such gems(?) as a "Sarah Palin WTF Calendar".

If you're an animal lover and want to help out a Somerville shelter, Pets in Need sells "alumni" calendars every year and we still have some left! They're really lovely, I use mine every year. http://animal-adoptions.org/calendar2012.html

PM me if you (or anyone else!) is interested and I can meet you to sell you one, I'm not sure if the vets listed have any left in stock. No need to pay shipping charges. $13 each.

I was just going to mention this one; they're selling them at Geoffrey's Cafe in Boston, for $15 plus a free appetizer. :)

Gourmet Express, across Mass. Ave. from Porter Square shopping center, is a combination convenience store and restaurant that is open 24 hours. I don't call it a 'sandwich shop' because it sells more than that, and I'm hesitant to call it 'quick serve' because I've waited quite a while for meals there at times. But you order food at the counter and either take it out or eat it at their tables inside.

Most Dunkin Donuts locations, including Davis Square, open at 5 am. A few such as Porter Square are open 24 hours.

I think the Dunkin Donuts in Union Square is open 24-7. Which I'm confused by, because I'm pretty sure it's in Somerville, and I thought Somerville didn't allow businesses to be open round the clock.

Shaw's in Porter is open 24 hours!

That part of the shopping center is actually in Cambridge, so the Shaw's is not a Somerville business.

All of the shopping center is in Cambridge.

The furniture store, nail salon, and dry cleaners on Elm St, which I think of as part of the same shopping center, are in Somerville. :P

They aren't part of the shopping center, though. If you park at the shopping center and leave the lot to go to these businesses, you could be towed.

Brookline Booksmith, as of a week ago, was one of the few places that hadn't halved their 2012 calendar prices, which meant they had loads in stock. Don't know if that's still true, but it might be worth a call.

I work there - we don't necessarily have loads in back stock, but we have a decent selection available. We traditionally wait until February or so to discount them, but it depends from year to year. The 50% off "display copies" will go out soon.

OP - you are definitely not the only one who waited "this long" to buy one! There is even a market for them all the way through the year due to people moving or whatever, though we usually sell out by March or April.

Random place but I noticed Shaws in Porter Square had calendars for 40% off, I noticed this only because I thought it was kind of a rip-off, but they did indeed have 'em as of a couple hours ago.

Other places that might have calendars still: Porter Square Books, or Rodney's in Central.

I was at Target/ Somerville last week, and there were some on the clearance shelves near home/office supplies. You also could check the dollar section, near the registers; that's where I got my daughter's calendar last year.

Speaking of calendars that help animal groups, you can still buy a House Rabbit Network 2012 calendar: It's $10 + $3 shipping.

I tried to get a specific type of 2012 planner on Jan 2 and had to go to 5 different places looking. At Paper Source (downtown) where I eventually found it, they had a number of really nice, large format 2012 calendars left (admittedly a week+ ago).

Porter Square Books had calendars still when I was in there the other day. You'd probably want to call to double check first, but I imagine they still have some.

Twin Donut in Union Square (the Boston one) opens at 4am on weekdays and is a fine place to go at that time for a coffee and an egg/cheese/bacon sandwich.

If it's not contemporary, Dolly's Late Night Restaurant on Highland (right where it goes one-way going into Davis) used to be open from 11pm to dawn or so. (...when did it close, anyway? It's been a few years now at least.)

More than a few years :-) Dolly's hasn't been around since the '90s, IIRC.

They had some at Porter Square Books yesterday, but not a lot. However, Rodney's, in Central Square, has a HUGE number of 2012 calendars available, usually until August, but definitely right now. I believe they buy all the remaindered ones as they come back into the distributors.

In case this is still relevant,

VistaPrint (a local company in Waltham) is offering a free wall calendar at http://vistaprint.com/valpak2012
