FYI - Just saw this posted on the city's Facebook page:

"BAN ON SKY LANTERNS ANNOUNCED: Citing the devices as a “serious fire hazard,” the Somerville Fire Dept. has issued a citywide ban on the use of sky lanterns. The paper or cloth lanterns float like helium balloons using hot air generated from a candle or other open flame placed inside the lantern. Violators are now subject to fines up to $1,000. The ban came after recent reports of sky lantern use in the city, including that one lantern landed on a roof while still burning. “For our densely-populated community, with so many wooden-framed homes side by side, these devices present a high potential for serious harm,” said Deputy Chief Sullivan."

I don't see this on the city website yet. I wish the city would update the actual city website rather than facebook.

This was a Fire Dept. press release, not a City release. Normally, we don't publish Fire or Police press releases in the News section of the City website.

On the other hand, the Somerville Police need no help from us on the PR side, since they have a website of their own (http://www.somervillepolice.org/), a Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/#!/SomervillePolice), and a highly experienced chief spokesperson in the person of Deputy Chief Paul Upton.

But since the SFD has no website of its own, I'll look into the idea of publishing their (not very frequent) press releases on the City News pages.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation!

Somehow I'd missed that the SPD had their own website now. I've added the RSS feed for it to my list of 'news' things. (I don't care for facebook, but I loves me some RSS feeds to keep track of things like this.)

I think of the city government as a single entity. It makes sense to centralize all press releases in a single place, regardless of what departments they come from. Duplication is not always a bad thing.

Yup, I saw the one that landed on someone's roof. These lanterns really don't belong in a populated area.

Seconding that! I am glad the city has created a policy.

I'm sort of surprised that releasing open flames into the sky isn't already covered by existing fire safety laws.

A $1000 fine seems awfully low for such dangerous stupidity.
