Kid's backpack was stolen from the Rite Aid parking lot in Davis, it contained her best friend for years and years -- her pink stuffed leopard.

Photo of my little girl and her best friend the leopard:

Photo of her backpack

"Around 5 or 6pm on Thursday our unlocked van was broken into while parked at the Rite Aid parking lot outside Davis Square in Somerville. The only object stolen was our 7 1/2 year old daughter's school backpack. Besides her school books, and her half-eaten lunch, the only item in there of note was the pink leopard in the photo.
Her name is Lisa Leopard.
She has had her since she was 3 years old. This is the go-to comfort toy. No, this is her best friend. This is the thing she brought to EVERY SINGLE "show and tell" day at school for a year.
This is her Hobbes. In fact, when I introduced her to Calvin and Hobbes last year, it was as if she had written the comics in a previous life.
So as you can imagine, I have spent the last several hours in the rain inspecting every square inch within a five block radius of the crime scene. I have been trying to get into the heads of whatever stoner kids found an unlocked door, grabbed the first thing they saw, and looked inside, and realized that there was nothing worth stealing. I have gone into every trash can and made friends with the T station workers. I even chatted up a few of the downtrodden folks at the bottle redemption center.
Tomorrow I'm posting signs. If you happen to see this Leopard, please, for the love of childhood, PM me.
Thank you."

I've retweeted this and will definitely keep an eye out. I am very sorry this happened to Lisa and her friend.

I love how they both have the same gesture and facial expression in that picture. They look like great friends, and I hope they are reunited soon.

I had a BFF kitty, too...

I just bought an identical leopard on eBAY. If all else fails, at least the little girl can have her friend back.
I will send your friend an email.

Poor kid! I wish that I were in the Square more frequently so I could keep an eye out.

And OMFG what horrible comments on UniversalHub. People break windows to get stuff that looks interesting (as happened to a British friend in a similarly-good neighborhood recently), so it's not just leaving the door unlocked.

Yeah the UH comments are so bad they make my brain seize up, unable to fathom, and unable to explain all the different levels of unfathomability.

This story is sad--I hope it works out OK.

This makes me want to cry. I had a toy bulldog that was my best friend and comfort. If anything had ever happened to him, I would have been an absolute wreck. Poor little girl. I so hope the leopard is found.

This is horrendously sad. :( Are you guys checking trash cans & dumpsters nearby?

It's strange that someone would steal a child's backpack, but my experience with backpack theft from high school is that people tend to steal the bag, rifle through it for valuables, then dump the evidence at the nearest possible location...
