Read through banking tag.  Some followup questions:

Do any of the local banks have images of deposits in their online banking or a deposit at home using a scanner service?

If I wanted to go hyperlocal, is Winter Hill Bank the only bank that is headquartered in Somerville?  Are East Cambridge Savings Bank, CPCU, Cambridge Savings Bank the only banks headquartered in Cambridge?  MIT Federal Credit Union doesn't count (for me) since they aren't open to the public.

DCU does, they are a little farther afield but since setting up my account I haven't needed a branch because the online banking is so awesome. www.dcu.org

They're technically not open to the public, but you can become eligible to join by donating to a particular charity, iirc.

yeah and the donation can be as little as 10 dollars I think, it was very easy to do by going to a branch.

Central Bank and Middlesex Federal are also based in Somerville. Cambridge Trust is based in Cambridge. Century Bank is based in Medford (but their nearest office to Davis Square is on Mass. Ave. in Cambridge)

I've been pretty happy with East Cambridge and Cambridge. I think they both post their check images online.

Many banks offer "remote deposit" for business accounts, but few Massachusetts banks offer the service to consumers just yet. Rockland Trust on the South Shore is one that does. Bank of America plans to launch their offering sometime this year. You might check with the other banks on their timing.

One alternative in the meantime is to set up two accounts, one with a local community bank or credit union, and a second with an online bank like USAA or Ally that accepts scanned check images. Then you can transfer the money between the two.
