Redundant and unneeded pharmacy to replace useful furniture store in Porter Square

According to the Porter Square Neighborhood Association mailing list, Pier One will close and a Walgreen's will move into both Pier One's space and the vacant ex-Blockbuster Video above it.

(Is there anything at all you can buy at Walgreen's that you can't just as easily buy at the CVS across the street?)

I don't have much need for what's sold there, but the place seems reasonably busy, and the neighborhood doesn't have much else in the way of furniture stores.

Eddie's used furniture on Elm St will get you a lot more for your money!

I don't see why the landlord would want to rent to Walgreens with a CVS across the street when they had a perfectly happy Pier One there, though. Maybe we are missing something. (And what about the space where Uno's used to be?)

I guess because Walgreen's wants both floors - Pier One and ex-Blockbuster above it. Though I think the result will be a pretty awkward drugstore. The only two-story drugstore I've ever been to is the Harvard Square CVS, and that isn't much fun to navigate.

The CVS at Copley Square is also two floors. Until you learn what's on what floor it's a bit awkward--especially since the escalator to the 2nd floor isn't immediately noticeable. The first couple of times I went there to pick up something quick, I walked out quickly puzzled. Having not found stuff I couldn't believe they didn't have, but since I couldn't find it, and was tired of looking, and in a hurry, I just left.

Wait, this is that building in Porter? Uno's closed? I am clearly out of touch.

Uno closed two years ago and is still sitting empty. (Why doesn't Walgreens move in there?)

Probably because the space is equipped for a restaurant and the landlord wants to rent it to a place that will use that and not rip it out?

Good point. I do wonder why it's been sitting empty so long. People like to eat outdoors in nice weather, and this is a good people-watching spot.

Liquor license. Half the place is a bar, and I guarantee you Cambridge didn't let Uno's or the landlords keep the license.
