I have two nice hats, both fedora-esque (one pictured in the icon) that through moves and general lack of attention are dusty, misshapen and abused. I would like to get them steamed into shape and cleaned properly. Does anyone have a recommendation? I don't know if this is an obvious thing that drycleaners do, or I need to find some kind of haberdasher?

Thanks!

ask the haberdashery in harvard square-- goorin bros. they probably do hat steaming, or they will be able to tell you where to go

I would recommend asking someone in a hat shop. I remember a sales clerk at Salmagundi saying that they knew of places that could service hats.

This is not a service that most dry cleaners offer. In fact, they usually will refuse to clean hats because the process they use flattens them.

Salmagundi has done some amazing hat repairs, according to the guy running http://www.anaffordablewardrobe.blogspot.com/

As for shaping, however, I received an unshaped (open crown) fedora, and shaped it myself.

The term you want to use when asking about this service is "cleaned and blocked". You want to use a good professional haberdashery, as they not only have the expertise but also the proper equipment. You also may want them to change the lining. I had this done to a beloved leather fedora years ago, and never regretted it.

If you're near Boston Common, there's also a haberdasher near there. Don't remember their name, but they're on Tremont.

Jessen here from Salmagundi. We are a full service hat shop and we offer cleaning and blocking on site at our shop in Jamaica Plain. If you haven't taken care of those hats in need of some love already we would be happy to help!
Cheers!
