Hotel recommendations

Hey wise-folks of the live journal,
I'm going to be in the Boston area in early June and need to stay at a hotel for about a week. I'd love to stay near/around Davis (got to also be near the train) and was looking for suggestions that are nice, but won't break the bank.

Any suggestions?

A friend of mine just stayed at A Cambridge House Inn, a few minutes (walking) outside of Davis Square on Mass Ave. The room seemed perfectly adequate, and he said it was cheaper than some of the other options, but I don't know precisely what that means.

I tagged this 'lodging'; you may want to look at previous posts. The only actual hotel anywhere near Davis is the Homewood Suites (formerly Hawthorn Suites) just over the Arlington line at Mass. Ave. and Route 16. Otherwise, you're looking at B&Bs such as the one suggested above, or Morrison House on Morrison Ave. in Somerville.

Further out than you might be looking for, but Harding House just outside of central square has been a lifesaver for relatives in the past. It's about 6 blocks to the red line, but has both parking and actual breakfasts.

My parents and in-laws have both stayed there and found it charming and less expensive than other nearby hotels. The decor is a little frilly but it seems to be the best value within walking distance.

The Marriott in Kendall has, I am told, redone a lot of the interior fixtures in the past few years, and although it's not in Davis it's literally right on top of the train station.

When my parents visited a few years ago they stayed the Meacham Manor, but Yelp tells me it's now closed. :-(

They have two buildings, and my friend was in the non-frilly one, I guess. Or at least, a non-frilly room?

I can recommend Morrison House, where my family has stayed a couple of times. The hosts are a nice couple who'll mostly stay out of your way, and they have a cat (Sebastian) who takes his role as groundskeeper and assistant host seriously.

The Davis square area sort of sucks for hotels since it's more of a residential area than a tourist attraction. There's a Holiday Inn express that's super close to the Lechemere stop on the green line and it's pretty walkable to get downtown if you don't want to take the T. If you have to absolutely be on the red line you'll probably have better luck with Kendall Sq than Harvard or Davis.

My in laws and parents stay at the Homewood Suites when they visit. They find it a convenient walk to Davis. That being said, i think it is pretty pricey, even with my dad's AAA discount. They do serve quite a nice breakfast, though, and never mind when we join them to eat. They also do a light dinner in the evenings most nights.

I have also had family stay at Morrison Bed and Breakfast and they also enjoyed that quite a bit.

if you want something with basically no frills at all, Cameron Inn on Cameron Avenue (Cambridge side) is basically just a room on the bike path. It does not include breakfast, and I'm pretty sure there are no TVs. my parents paid $500 for 10 nights there a few years back.

A very mediocre but cheap option is the best western in fresh pond. Priceline could in fact be to the rescue here.

Off topic (but not entirely): does the city still want to have a hotel built in Davis Square? Haven't heard anything about that in awhile.

But it doesn't look like there's been much action since 2009. They also misspelled Davis Square, rather embarrassingly.

I have put work guests at A Cambridge House for long stays. The two buildings are one "Victorian" style - the frilly one - and one "contemporary." The people are really nice.

Near Harvard, Irving House is also pretty cheap. They have some shared-bath and single-bed options that are more in the style of European guest houses, and where sometimes you can actually go below $100/night.
