Bathroom Remodeler
Mar. 3rd, 2012 03:39 pmI need some help finding a contractor to remodel my bathroom. It is a small space and I am not looking to do anything dramatic - just putting new stuff where the old stuff is. Have gotten a few quotes from places I found on Angie's List but they seem way out there. One says it will take four weeks and that I will be without a toilet (my only toilet) the whole time. The other wants more than $15,000 (not including the tile, tub, fixtures, etc.)
I know people have had success with Sergio's but I have left several messages that have not been returned.
Any others people have gotten good work from at a reasonable price?

Given that price and timeline, it sounds like more than just take "just putting new stuff where the old stuff is". And replacing tile is well beyond the 'just put new stuff where the old was'.
Taking out tile is a good day, maybe more depending on the adhesive and quantity of tile. Then, depending on current construction and needs, it could be another day installing cement board and patching. Then hanging and setting the tile, and letting it cure. Re-tiling taking a week is hardly surprising.
Changing the tub may require reinforcing the floor, and several inspections. If you're adding a jacuzzi tub or something similar with electric work, you may need to have it own its own circuit, so possibly a new circuit and wire to be pulled. Depending on the current state of your electric breaker/circuit box, that could need replacing as well (mine does, in order to stay up to code the next time I add a new circuit). A bathroom fan may mean fixing, repairing, or replacing duct work.

$15,000 seems high and 4 weeks seems long; I'd expect closer to $10,000 and 2 weeks, but those are on the order of what I'd expect.
You'll want to either install a temporary bathroom elsewhere, get a port-o-potty, or stay elsewhere during the remodel. There's no way around that.
