Drinks?

So if you were going to meet someone for the first time and they suggested drinks, where would you go? I'm hoping for something reasonably casual, but I'm not real familiar with the area, so I don't even have a good starting point. :( Help?

I think Orleans qualifies as 'reasonably casual' without being excessively loud or crowded (yes, Redbones, I'm talking about you)

If you and your friend like Irish music you could try the Burren.

One thing in the Burren's favor - no TV sets.

My go-to place is Sabur -- comfy lounge area, fun drinks, never crowded or noisy.

Sabur is awesome in every way and very cozy.

Sabur fourthed. I'd disrecommend Orleans unless you enjoy cloying blue drinks of the "omg! it tastes like there's no alcohol in this at all! I'm soooo drunk!" variety.

I'll chime in to agree. They have great cocktails and delicious appetizers in a lovely ambience.

Sabur is comfy? Man, I must have been seated in the wrong room, or something.

Did you sit in the dining area (wooden, straight-back chairs) or the lounge (couches, armchairs)?

There's a lounge? Well then. I remember the dining area being so disappointing I never bothered to go back.

I actually went to Posto for drinks on a first date (my suggestion) and though I love the atmosphere and the drinks, it was impossibly crowded and we just awkwardly hovered near the bar (in everyone's way, of course) because there was nowhere for us to sit. I enthusiastically recommend Posto for a non-weekend-rush date.

I'm not sure about a Thursday--If you get there before 7pm, it probably won't be so crowded. Also, if you don't mind waiting a bit, something is bound to open up (or you can put your name in for a table). We were just impatient, so we left after one drink and went to Sligo instead (not recommended).

Sligo would be taking 'casual' way too far ;-)

I love Posto, but I don't know if I'd recommend it for a first date full of chatting. It can get very loud and echoey in that space, depending on the crowd and how loud they've turned the music up to. Though I'm glad to hear people say that the bartenders are 'flawless'. The last time I went, the bartenders were so terrible that they were only able to make pre-mixed drinks.

I have to recommend Toad in porter. Before music kicks off later in the evening its usually pretty quiet.

I'm surprised -- that place is *tiny*.

I agree with everyone who recommended Sabur. Too bad it's not yet warm enough to use their patio.

Saloon isn't bad if you like cocktails and get there early enough before the crowds roll in. The bar at Flatbread is fun too. Same advice about the crowds.
