Last year's Porchfest was a great success, so the Somerville Arts Council is planning another one, to be held all over the city on Saturday, May 19.

As the Arts Council describes it: "Perhaps you’ve sat on your porch and overheard a neighbor strumming guitar on another porch? Porchfest takes this idea and multiplies it. This is not a festival per se but rather a community event where Somervillians share their love of playing and listening to music. Think of Somerville Open Studios, which is for visual artists, but for music."

If you'd like to participate and be listed on the official Porchfest map, please go to http://somervilleartscouncil.org/porchfest and follow the three steps listed there. You can perform on your porch, or anyone else's porch that you have permission to use. Last year, some musicians also played on upper-floor balconies, rooftops, and public parks.

I'm not a musician, but had a great time at PorchFest last year.as a spectator. It was so much fun to walk around on a nice day and hear so many different kind of music from some very talented neighbors. Looking forward to it!

I still think they should try to get on more 2nd floor decks to perform. Gives it more of a performance aspect and draws more attention from folks who aren't aware it's going on.

Actually, I think it's as much up to the people who volunteer their porches... though the performers get their input, too.

As someone with a second floor deck, I think this would be less optimal. You can't really see my deck well from below and would have to watch from across the street. The sound wouldn't be as good and there wouldn't really be an opportunity to interact directly with the musicians.

I'd have to agree with gruene. I've played on a friend's porch (which actually moved to the lawn when too many friends showed up) the past couple of years, and part of the fun is the interaction with people wandering by, listening, and asking questions. But if you have a good upper porch and no good lower porch (or lawn), you should certainly use it.
