Another Day, Another Vote in Somerville

Yes, it's that dang WFNX "My Song Is Better than Your Song" contest, and we need to vote again this morning, March 8th.  It was fun the first six times, and perhaps less so now, but it's still our civic duty.

Here's the skinny from the City's New Media Czarina, Denise Taylor:
This is it! If we win today against Newburyport, we tie Melrose for the all-time record of Battle of the Mayor wins. Then in two weeks it’s an epic rematch with Mayor Dolan of Melrose and we go out in a blaze of glory—all thanks to you.

 So… pass this onto your friends too:

 Please tune in to WFNX 101.7 FM at 9 a.m., then wait to hear both songs be played and for voting to be opened (voting earlier doesn’t count), and then VOTE for our song by 9:30 a.m. (I’ll send the name of the song a soon as it’s announced).

Tom, I'm so glad we have you back, but I'm afraid I have to take you to task here. I was brought up to believe that civic duty was important. It is not always a grand thing: I perform my civic duty every time I call in a broken streetlight or pick up litter and put it in the trash can. But neither is it a trivial thing, and to invoke it for something as silly as a radio station contest demeans an idea that has already fallen on hard times.

To paraphrase a great Bostonian, the incomparably wonderful Joseph N. Welch (http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/welch-mccarthy.html), "Have you no sense of humor, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of humor?" (I suppose I am compounding my error here by making light of one of the most powerful and moving moments in American political discourse -- but I'm trying to be humorous, fer cryin' out loud. That's it, that's all. No big whup.)

While infinitely fallible, and often wrong, I promise you that I really do understand the difference between, on the one hand, taking part in a silly and trivial radio call-in competition and, on the other hand, doing one's actual civic duty -- a social virtue I hold in the highest esteem.

But this is the InterTubez. Without irony, hyperbole and a dash of snark, we'd all go mad. Please allow me this minor license.
