There's been an outcry over proposed MBTA fee hikes and services cuts that the agency says are necessary to close a $161 million budget gap next year.

So what would you do?

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) created an online 'Fix the T' calculator at http://fixthet.mapc.org that allows residents to choose how they would make up the MBTA's current shortfall.

Included are fare hikes and service cuts initially proposed by the MBTA; options presented by the MBTA Advisory Board; and others.

According to a release from the MAPC, the MBTA is preparing to adopt a budget by April 15.

"MAPC created this budget calculator to collect these ideas in one place and give people an opportunity to come up with their own plan," the release said. Even better, the website includes a link that allows users to share their ideas with their legislators."

Visit http://fixthet.mapc.org to try your hand at fixing the MBTA’s budget and tell us the solutions you came up with in the comments below.

I like how I can more than fix the problem with one click: "State reassumes all debt it transferred to MBTA in 2000". Done.

If only I could find the "link that allows users to share their ideas with their legislators." Anyone spotted that, or do they not actually have such a link?

At the bottom, under the heading "Take Action". The button itself is called "Email Your Legislator".

Speaking of emailing your legislator, at least we know our legislators in this area support reforming the inadequate T funding. Other folks in the legislature who need to hear from us are those who are dragging their heels on the matter or have spoken out against legislative reform of the T funding like the Speaker of the House Robert A. DeLeo.

These elected officials are the ones who will make decisions about the funding the T.

Done. It was shockingly easy to fix the budget with the calculator. Even half the Big Dig debt transferred elsewhere would be pretty much a solid win.

Next. Calculator of what state services you would cut or which taxes or fees you would raise to pay for the reassumption of this debt.

Raise the income tax, duh!

ETA: By which I mean, make the personal income tax more progressive and raise taxes on corporations. ;)

I would be happy with ending corporate giveaways, which are many and varied.

- Filming Tax Credit (State pays for *ALL* filming costs)

- Economic Development Incentive Program (State gives tax breaks to companies that "create jobs", including refunding local taxes) See: http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2010/03/14/jobs_program_lost_its_way__and_tax_money/?page=full

- Biotech subsidies (Like the EDIP on steroids, but only for the biotech industry)

Using the numbers from that site, the entire debt service expense could be covered by a 10.5c/gal rise in the gas tax, which hasn't gone up in many many years.

Heh. That would make the total 34c/gal which would move us up from 29th highest to 11th (between Florida and West Virginia) in the US. Not even close to European levels; in fact, it'd be only a cent higher than Rhode Island's current level (and still 15c/gal under New York's!).
