Anyone else woken up by our wild gobbler this morning around 5am? I thought it was some annoying turkey ring tone or something that someone wouldn't turn off, until I woke up and realized the turkey I saw on Sunday night was still around! He or she is kind of skinny for a turkey, and super awesome to see! :-D I need to close my storm windows.

Tagging 'pets' and 'local landscape' for want of anything better. If you see him again, can you take a photo?

There has been a turkey around the area recently. They pop up more in suburban areas these days now that they have basically no predators. Do dote that these are wild animals and not likely to be friendly or docile birds.

Speaking from experience, the 'domestic' turkeys can be kind of aggressive.

I'd put them on par with geese for obnoxiousness.

saw him in our neighbors backyard on Tuesday, and then on the bike path near the square later the same day.

So, what are the Somerville regulations regarding the hunting of wild game?

No, but there was an intermittent car alarm on Broadway between 4am and 7:30am. :(

Is there a standard number to call to complain about car alarms? 311?

Oh! I just remembered I also thought I heard a flock of seagulls this morning too. But it might have been turkeys?

What area? I saw one quite some time ago in a tree at the intersection of Packard Ave and Ossipee Rd. (Between Teele and Powderhouse, in other words.)

Wild turkeys in general are rather skinny, FYI. It's normal.

Domesticated turkeys are bred with such big breasts, they can't mate. They also tend to drown in rainstorms.

My dad was an insurance adjuster and I went with him to witness dead turkeys after a rainstorm. It's possible that it was more about trampling each other than drowning, but there were lots of dead turkeys in that pen.

I chased him out of our backyard on Wallace St. several weeks ago. That bird is super loud.

I bow to your vastly superior turkey knowledge.

I'm only repeating what the farmers told me at the time (and something killed those turkeys), so I have to assume it's also a "rural legend".

Yes, the turkeys were insured. It was a pretty big operation and I think there were dozens of dead turkeys that he cut a check for on the spot.

Our neighborhood near Cedar and Summer enjoyed the extended visit last summer of a female turkey. She became quite a celebrity with her own Facebook page (search "Somerville Turkey") with nearly 400 friends, a name ("Fred" - despite being a female), and song! She was a delightful addition to the 'hood. Females tend to be docile so if the one visiting you is a female (no "beard"), she won't chase you or anything.

Yes, Call 311. They'll send out the cops to check it. Be sure to reallllly point out if it is intermittent as I've had to call them back a few times to get them to address the issue. Usually happens when a car battery gets really low, I've noticed :)
