Jewish Takes on Arthurian Legends
Apr. 17th, 2012 05:42 pmJoin Havurat Shalom on Friday April 27 at 6:30 pm for services, Shabbat dinner and a class: “Jewish Takes on Arthurian Legends” taught by Ruth Abrams.
Registration deadline: April 20. RSVP to registrar@thehav.org or 617-623-3376.
Cost: $10. Everyone is welcome, regardless of ability to pay.
A Jewish King Arthur? Yes--more than one! Arthur's tale is sometimes called The Matter of Britain, but it caught the imagination of well over half of Europe. There were Italian versions, German ones, French stories of Arthur's court, Serbian, Spanish--Yiddish, and even Hebrew. If you've been the kind of geek who read Arthurian novels or watches Arthurian television shows or films, you are part of a long tradition, and if you are the kind of geek who liked to make fun of the mainstream values of western culture through these Arthurian stories, you are part of a long Jewish tradition! We'll read a little of the 1279 Hebrew Arthur story discovered and translated by Curt Leviant, and have a good time.
