Is there a map online, or a database from which a map could be built, of where trash pickup happens each day of the week near Davis, or for all of Somerville or Cambridge?

'The States' comes from the names of all the streets in that area - Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, etc. Another name for the area is Mount Benedict, for a large hill that used to be there. (A small remnant still exists on nearby Austin and Benedict streets.)
There once was a crime problem around Beacon and Washington streets. Some thought the crime was that federal agents were chasing local entrepreneurs. Others thought the problem was those selling illegal alcohol who, when pursued, would duck into the maze of streets making up the neighborhood. Either way, no matter whose side you were on, the neighborhood became known as "Duck Village" for the folks who would duck in and out of workers' homes and yards to avoid police.
