I noted with interest the post earlier in the weekend about Somerville soil results. Does anyone know the relative metal content of the soil in the community garden along the bike path? I do not have a plot there but have often wondered how this is handled, if at some point in the past it was dug out and replaced.

I do not know specifically about that garden, but I know the one we use near Fresh Pond was dug out and completely refilled and was tested to be okay. I would hope something similar would be true for the bike path one. Somerville probably has someone in charge who could answer that, though I don't know who that would be.

I e-mailed someone who used to be involved with this garden, and he said:

"Hi, Ron. Yes, Somerville soil has elevated lead levels. Furthermore, because the bikeway garden was built along a railroad right-of-way, we had to deal with whatever was in the soil from years of railway use. When the garden was constructed, entirely new (safe!) soil was brought in. We're essentially doing raised-bed gardening on a very large scale."
