The City of Somerville’s Open Streets Initiative, SomerStreets, is a monthly celebration from June – October of each year, during which the City closes sections of roads to vehicle traffic in favor of walking, running, biking, dancing, and other activities. By partnering with local businesses and organizations, one Sunday each month the city transforms different Somerville neighborhoods into celebrations of active living, community pride, and live entertainment.

Date: 2012-06-02 02:38 am (UTC)as someone lives in Somerville, and who *has* to be at a certain place outside Somerville by midday Sunday, every Sunday (and I don't have the option of non-car transportation since I need a car immediately thereafter), all these Sunday road closings mostly just cause me stress, and I don't enjoy any of them.

Date: 2012-06-02 12:59 pm (UTC)And some future Sunday street-closing events are listed here.
ETA: Another event to keep in mind is the fireworks display that Somerville puts on the Thursday evening before the Fourth of July. This year, that's June 28. It closes Broadway from Ball Square to Magoun Square, as well as Cedar Street from about the bike path north to Broadway.
