Someone I know has a reserved parking space that's under a mature walnut tree. He had some damage to his car last fall from falling nuts (lots of dents and a broken sunroof).

He's gotten an estimate from an arborist to trim the tree, but it probably wouldn't help. The tree is so tall that the nuts could still reach the parking space even from the furthest part of the tree.

I assume this problem has occurred a lot in New England. Does anyone have any ideas, short of cutting down the tree or building a garage?

Yes, or a suspended tarp of some sort?

I know fruit trees can be 'netted' to catch the fruit. A hardware store or gardening store would probably be able to point you in the right direction for purchasing something pre-made or the parts to make something yourself.

"Portable carport"
Caravan Canopy 10 by 20 Domain Carport, White, $98.97 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping. ETA: that's just the first result. There are others, and probably the more expensive ones will be more sturdy, which if it's going to be left up all walnut-season, whatever that is, it will probably need to be.

I wonder if the arborist could be enlisted to install something like this tree netting, at least on the side of the tree nearest the car.

You can get rid of the tree, or put a soft cover on the car, or just get used to dents.

Put a slanted net under the branches, so the nuts roll onto the sidewalk.

Carport. Would also help to keep the snow off the car in the winter.

Give us location of the tree so we may harvest the nuts. I'm sure the freegan meet-up would be especially happy to help.
