Amnesty International Regional Office to close

Looks like the Amnesty International Northeast Regional office in Davis Square is closing. Here's the notice I saw:

You have probably heard the news by now that the Board of Directors of Amnesty International USA voted to close regional offices as part of a Reduction of Force. This measure was brought on by a difficult fiscal situation. The Northeast Regional Office will close sometime this summer or early fall. Both Joshua Rubenstein, our Northeast Regional Director, and Bonne Knipfer, our Senior Office Administrator, will be leaving the AIUSA staff as of Tuesday, July 17, 2012. Josh has been on the staff since 1975 and Bonne came to us in 1986.

Are they merging the Northeast Region with some other region whose office will remain open?

I received a follow-up email to the above announcement and it seems that AI employees and volunteers have submitted...wait for it... a petition to stop the layoffs. I believe it didn't have any impact on the Board of Directors, but I doubt the effort is over.
