Places to drop household compost?

Hi all,

My husband and I recently moved from near Inman Square to nearer Porter/Davis. We haven't set up a compost bin yet at our new place, though we hope to be able to soon. I know the Whole Foods on Prospect St. in Cambridge (near Central) takes household compost, and during the winter the farmer's market at the Armory will... but are there any other places (nearer than that Whole Foods) that will accept compost during the summer?

(Worst case, me and the compost will take a little trip on the 83 bus this afternoon...)

Well, we've got a compost bin that's always hungry -- still haven't gotten any compost out of it, it just keeps compressing. Feel free to feed ours! :-D

Thanks for the link to that older thread! I'm hopeful we won't have to go with a paid route since this is a short-term problem, but nice to see there are multiple options. And the Growing Center seems like a good possibility as well.

I have a small bag of compost that is looking for a bin. Do you still have space in yours? We have a CSA in Waltham and only pick up every other week and I forgot to bring ours today. Let me know.

Most Whole Foods have a compostable bin, as well. Next to their various recycling bins (batteries, cell phones, bags, etc.)

Which Whole Foodses are you thinking of? I've only seen compost bins at Prospect Street.

I know there is one in Medford, and I thought there was one at Fresh Pond.

I think that there's a difference between a "compostables" bin and a "compost" bin. I'm not sure if they want you walking into the eating area of the WholeFoods and dumping your decomposing compost into their buckets...

The ones at the Prospect St. Whole Foods are large (though frequently pretty full) and they're outside, in the rear of the parking lot next to the dumpsters. Haven't been to the Fresh Pond one in ages so I don't know how that one's laid out... but yeah, I see what you mean about inside "compostables" (like napkins and stuff) vs. the stuff I need to unload.

Exactly. I think that the previous poster was talking about the napkins can, not the outside bin... Good luck though!
