Lizards need special care to stay alive. They need shade and heat and water and the proper food. You should try to get it to a shelter asap or else it might die, because they "look healthy" until they are within an hour of death (It's an instinctual survival trait..don't look sick, or you'll get culled). If you can't get it to a shelter, I might know someone who rescues lizards.
I just called my rescue friend, who contacted the OP. Rescue friend can't post, so I'm sending a followup. It's a bearded dragon, fairly valuable critter, likely abandoned "back to nature" by a dumb college grad / dropout who didn't have the sense to know these lizards can't survive a New England autumn, let alone winter. A reptile rescue group is in the process of being contacted.
Sadly I called the local rescue and even a friend who I thought might have an open spot and they are all filled up. Animal Rescue League Rescue dispatch - 657-777-2752 goes to the answering machine, so they must be out on another rescue. Apparently lots of people have moved this month and dumped pets. I can't take the beardie myself. They make great pets, unlike most reptiles they like to hang out with people. I hope the original owner steps forward and gets the pet home.
I thought this community was set to allow comments by anyone with an LJ account, but that non-members of the community had to solve a CAPTCHA. If this is not the case, I'd like to find out soon.
I came home from vacation today and found a hand written note about a missing lizzard. This lizzard appears to be my neighbors. I just called and gave him your phone number, but the cell phone connection wasn't great. If you don't hear from him soon, give me your email and I'll send you his phone number.
So did the beardie make it home? If it's not theirs or still needs a place get in touch with me. I'm a sucker and will gladly take him in as I know proper reptile care and have owned several snakes and cared for a beardie before.
Owner was successfully contacted, and very excited. Boston Animal Rescue League had already come and picked it up, but I'm sure owner will be able to retrieve Beardie from them.
Apparently, the lizard managed to escape from an outdoor enclosure.
And because Metro reporters browse DSLJ, you can now read all about it here (http://www.metro.us/boston/local/article/1149742--bearded-dragon-found-chillin-in-somerville).
