Onigiri, sort of
Aug. 16th, 2012 08:57 pmThere is a Japanese grocery place called Miso a few block up Mass Ave from Porter Square. The sign says they do sushi and bento boxes, so I went in to see if this meant they also do onigiri. They do. Flavor include spicy tuna, cooked salmon, umeboshi, and konbu. They were mostly out by six o'clock (open til eight).
I bought a few pieces to try. The ratio of rice to non-rice filling is very high, much more so than Kotobukiya's. But I'm inclined to hope they can be persuaded to increase the non-rice proportions.

Date: 2012-08-17 03:23 pm (UTC)"Here is the recipe of 'Okonomiyaki' and 'how to make it' on youtube ;)
*serves: 4
soft wheat flour 200g
fish(or chicken) broth 250cc
Japanese mountain yam (1~2inches)
eggs 3
cabage 350~400g
spring onions 4
red pickled ginger 60g
others= whatever you like to add (We added cooked seafood mix that had scallops, shrimp, calamari, muscles, etc)
ex:thin sliced pork belly,cheese,corn,devil's tongue(?!),tenkasu,seafood,chicken,bacon etc..
any vegetables could be acceptable as well..
and, all those ingredients should be cut in little dices,or precooked (we did not precook anything, and diced the cabbage very fine)

She also then topped it with some mayonaise and bbq sauce (specially from the asian market, but just regular of both works) as well as fish bacon (bonita flakes)

Date: 2012-08-18 04:49 am (UTC)ETA: ZOMG! I just did a quick search for okonomiyaki in Boston and apparently you can get it at Ebi Sushi in Union Square! I foresee a trip there in the near future. :)
ETA again: Yes! There is Osaka-style okonomiyaki to be had at Ebi Sushi! It's on the daily specials board, but apparently it's always on there. Defaults are either pork or shellfish plus cabbage, but they agreed to make a vegetarian one for me tonight, even though they thought it was odd that I didn't want mayonnaise or bonito flakes on top. Oh, happy day.
