Come to Pat Jehlen's kickoff party, this Thursday! It's Orleans on Holland Street in Davis Square, 7-9pm Thursday evening (June 16th). It's a great chance to meet Pat (and there will be free food :)

Pat is currently a state rep from Somerville (Davis Square is in her district). She is running to replace state senator Charlie Shannon, who died of cancer this April. The district is most of Somerville, all of Medford and Winchester, and a bit of Woburn, and the vote is on August 30th.

Many of you probably already know Pat, or at least of her. I lived in her district for seven years, and she's one of my favorite legislators. She strongly supports gay rights, is co-sponsoring bills for instant runoff voting, nonpartisan redistricting, the state civil liberties resolution, and access to emergency contraception, she's chair of the senior caucus, and ... well, visit her web site. It would be so cool if she got promoted to state senate! And it'd be nice to have a state senator from Somerville (there haven't been any for a while).

This is a very competitive race, but she is the strongest candidate and is more likely to win than any of the others. And the more people attend this kickoff party, the more impressed the press will be, which will help her out a lot.

Dan, who works on Pat Jehlen's campaign, writes:
Pat, who is currently a state rep in Somerville, has 15 years experience as a leader in progressive politics. She is running for State Senate in a special election on August 30th -- only 11 weeks away! Despite the short time-frame, she has already been endorsed by: Bob Reich, MassEquality, The Commonwealth Coalition, 3 Teachers Unions, 4 SEIU locals, CPPAX, National Association of Social Workers, Mass NOW, and many more organizations and individuals.

This is an important election. Pat's main opponent is Paul Casey -- also a state representative. Casey is conservative, opposed to gay-marriage, and was a major Finneran supporter. The progressive community has rallied around Pat to ensure we win this important seat, but we need help.

If you can come to the kickoff, that's great! There is a suggested contribution of 25 dollars. If you can't do that but still wish to support Pat, that's fine and we would still like you there. If you can do more than that, you need to! We need to raise over 100,000 dollars in the next three months, so every contribution -- whether it is 5 or 500 dollars -- makes a huge difference.

Orleans is at 65 Holland Street, on the next block after Johnny D's. It's kind of diagonally across the street from the Holland Street red line exit.

So, who's going? Comment here.
