So what was up with the low flying helicopter about ten minutes ago and then all the sirens? Anyone know? (I'm near Ball Square, about a mile out from Davis. The helicopter was loud enough it sounded like it was flying through my house; the sirens sounded a few blocks away. I'm guessing they might well have been going along Broadway, but that is totally a guess.)

You can tune into the Somerville emergency scanners - police and fire - and "rewind" to hear earlier calls, at http://scanner.wickedlocal.com/northwest/arlington.php (which I found by searching this livejournal for "scanner"). One cool feature, when playing recorded history, the scanner app will skip over periods of silence so you can catch up to the present rather quickly.

Just gave it a listen. At about 7 am (the time of your post), a Somerville PD officer called dispatch to ask about any known activity because he just saw an unmarked vehicle from an outside agency speed past him; dispatch responded that a call was just coming in from U.S. Marshals that they have a suspect at 392 Broadway, wanted for a burglary in Cambridge, and that US Marshals are requesting units from SPD at 392 Broadway.

btw, I put that scanner, and several others, on the davis_square community profile page a while back. The scanner also covers Medford and other towns that neighbor Somerville.

I wanted to listen to the scanner today b/c I hear what sounds like all the emergency equipment ever going up highland toward davis. But I've just disabled Java b/c of the OMG-JAVA-WILL-EAT-YOUR-PETS whatamajig I was warned about this morning.

Anyway, Is there a non-Java way to listen?

also, Is Davis Square all aflame right now?

I listen to the scanner occasionally with Java. I've never heard of it causing problems for anyone. I doubt that Wicked Local (the Somerville Journal folks) have any interest in harming your computer.

(Not sure what your last question means -- I just now walked through Davis Square and everything looks totally normal.)
