Another frozen yogurt shop coming to Davis Square

Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt has applied for a special permit to occupy a storefront in Davis Square Plaza, most recently used as a martial arts studio, next to the tattoo parlor.

Orange Leaf is a national chain franchise. I hope Davis Square residents will instead patronize the new, locally-owned iYO Cafe, a block further east on Elm Street.

I second this. iYO has tasty stuff (waffles! a proliferation of toppings!), a neat inside, and very friendly people.

That's disappointing. They're going to essentially duplicate iYO's offerings. What a waste of store space, and bad news for iYO. I hope they don't last.

Starbucks arrived a few months after Diesel, which everyone thought was bad news for the locals. But both survived and thrive today. Maybe that story will repeat here.

That's true, but Diesel has their full line of sandwiches and breakfasts, artisan coffees, and a unique hipster vibe, so they're nicely differentiated from Starbucks. Looking at menus and photos of Orange Leaf, their fro-yo setup looks identical, their topping bar has exactly the same items, their flavors are the same, and they even have the same pricing. Hopefully iYO's waffle bar and coffee service will keep them unique and profitable.

iYO is here first, has a better street location, and seems to already be quite popular, judging from what I saw looking in their window tonight. So I think they'll be fine.

I work in Lexington which has an orange leaf (which is like 200 ft from a local froyo shop across the street) and I'm not really impressed. I prefer berryline...even pinkberry to them. Orange leaf yogurt is a lot thicker and more like soft serve ice cream than froyo. Most of the toppings are stuff that's terrible for you link candy and cookies (hardly any fruit). And it's always...always mobbed by screaming 3 year olds.
