Does anyone out there know why some of the sidewalk on this section of Liberty has been torn up, and why parking is restricted on both sides? I am so worried that the city is about to take down one of our beautiful trees!

I'm nowhere near there (I'm out of town right now) but torn-up sidewalk around a tree usually means the tree's roots heaved the sidewalk so it's being relaid.

We had that happen near my house on Glenwood Rd last weekend - and they replaced some nearby cracked-up sections while they were at it. For some reason some of this work was done on the weekend - they ripped up on Saturday, and poured concrete on Monday.

Yep, this is called "break-out" work -- look for "B/O" written on the No Parking signs.

I was worried about this too the first time I saw it. :-)

OH! We had a bunch of our street blocked off for "B/O" and my partner and I had a lot of fun trying to guess what it meant:
  • NO parking, neighbor with bad Body Odor
  • Bridge / Overpass (being built over the feeder streets to lexington ave
  • No parking, reserved for secret service, Barack Obama visiting,
  • Blood / Offal: no parking, meat processing

With it being right before our "street/block party" I at first thought it was for that! But then I saw the B/O signs and called the city and asked and found out about the Break Out terminology too :)

Yeah, I had no idea about the "breakout" terminology but I was home & heard the guy's radio as he put out the signs so I went out to see what was going on. I asked what "BIO" was and was told breakout - not the neatest writing on those signs!

FWIW, the city and the mayor love the trees. When one comes down it's usually because it has to. Then, they replant when it's possible to do so.
