An official City of Somerville sign in the window of 263 Elm Street, the former Mass. Insurance Agency, announces a public hearing for October 17 on an application by 'NE Frog Pond LLC' to establish a frozen yogurt parlor.

In Boston, Cambridge, and other parts of New England, this company operates Pinkberry franchises, so that's likely what they're proposing here too.

If the zoning board approves the special permit, this will be the third frozen yogurt shop in Davis Square, after iYO and Orange Leaf. Or maybe even the fourth, since JP Licks sells some frozen yogurt too.

Starbucks has tried twice to open one inside the Diesel restrooms, but the zoning board has luckily denied them both times.

I think that's Pinkberry.

I'm guessing part of their presentation will be to prove that they will have viability as a business with two pre-existing competitors. Three Fro-Yo places within a stones throw of each other is getting a wee bit excessive even for our population volume.

Possibly. I've seen local services express objection to the city for a new business coming in because similar services are offered a small geographic distance away...so if not the City, I am guessing someone will express that view at the zoning hearing.

We're down to 2 burrito places, so if history is our guide one of these 3 won't make it.

By that logic, JP Licks is a yogurt place and they cancel out :)

There will not be enough customers to support 3 FroYo places this winter...they will all go under, opening up 3 new locations for burrito joints.
