A friend of mine asked me to pass on a warning to fellow Davis Square people that there's a "serial masturbator" (I am truly sorry to post this phrase) in the area.

"...those of you in live in the area -- a black car with a license plate that ends in XZ with the engine idling. Don't look. And call the cops."

I've also been informed that "it's apparantly not a black car, but a dark green Nissan."

Did the police mention to your friend that he had been seen before or are you relying on heresay? Forgive me if i sound skeptical, I'm just one of those types that wants to see this pop up in the written police report over and over again before i start worrying about it! =)

Surprising to run across, sure, but not as upsetting as the idea of getting mugged or seeing someone jump on the tracks.

last summer at park street i witnessed some dude sitting bare-assed on the bench on the B line platform-- right next to the police station thing. he started fondling himself, licking his fingers, and winking at us. the platform was crowded, but for some reason no one noticed but my friend and i... even after i asked loudly "DOES ANYONE ELSE SEE THIS DUDE?!" nobody bothered to look. anyway, the story gets more graphic but i will spare you the details. i just thought it was weird that no one acknowledged him but us. has anyone had a similar experience there?

er... well it might be, but since sex offenders can often start out by doing stuff like this, and then move on to bigger things once they feel bolder, and also if the same people keep seeing him, he might be hanging around where they are on purpose, and that's kinda like stalking...

I don't understand the excitement, or the apparent consensus that this person is doing something bad and should be caught/stopped.

Does he have the car window open? Is he ogling people as they walk by? If not, have some compassion for the guy and leave him alone. It may be his best alternative to masturbating in an alley or in a cot next to 40 other people. He may have gotten enough of the shaft from society that he doesn't give much of a damn what you think, but still be considerate enough not to use a park bench.

If he's doing it where people can see him easily (which he seems to have done, multiple times), I would in fact consider that "bad". He's forcing other people to witness, and hence in a sense take part in, his sex acts.

He is *in a car*. It is not that hard to find places where one can park and not be seen by random passerby. The fact that he repeatedly chooses to masturbate in public even after being caught strongly suggests he wants to be seen, but also wants to drive away quickly if need be.

It strikes me that, if he has a car that runs, he could choose a secluded location for his activities if he wished. Like the "alley" you mentioned, for example.

Not having seen this person, and not being at all fully informed of the context of where he was seen masturbating, I don't know whether this person is choosing to be an exhibitionist, or whether the people who have encountered him repeatedly are just happening to come across him in a secluded location.

As someone who personally had a scary encounter with a masturbating exhibitionist as a child, I would definitely want to be sure that his behaviors weren't taking place in locales where they are likely to surprise children--or adults who would be "triggered" by witnessing them. If he's jacking off in his car in an alley, that's one thing. If he's jacking off in his car outside the library, then yes, what he's doing is inappropriate and he should be stopped.
