Johnnie's Foodmaster at Broadway and Alewife Brook Parkway had a 'Last 3 Days' sign up today. The shelves are getting pretty empty, and people inside confirmed that Saturday will be their last day of business. Liquidation discounts are at least 40% now.

At Somerville Patch, it looks like some folks are putting together a funeral vigil for the store, taking place Saturday at 10 am. If enough folks show up for that, it might send a useful message to other grocery chains that customers want to continue shopping at this location.

(and by the way - they have a lot of Mary Jane candies for sale. Anyone from PMRP want to grab it for resale at future shows?)

I am going to note I have found much better deals up at the Arlington Foodmaster than I did at the Alewife one; they still had about half the store filled today, and they were selling a lot of deli supplies (vats of stuff, bulk dates, sesame seeds, etc) for dirt cheap prices. 5lb blocks of cheese for $14-24 depending on the cheese, and today all their bakery items (they are still baking fresh) were 60% off.

There was also fresh coffee beans, 2lbs for $1.49, but I mentioned it to [livejournal.com profile] vibrantabyss after buying swiss chocolate almond and french vanilla yesterday, and he went in and bought them out of everything but the decaf. But if you want decaf, they had it in 4 flavours.

If you used to shop at the Alewife Foodmaster, where will you be going once it closes?

Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and Pemberton Market can all be on my way home from work depending which way I go, although any of those mean I'll have to bike over a mile home with my groceries so I can't get all that much at once. But they all have good fresh stuff. I'll probably do Peapod delivery for some other things, especially if I have a lot to get at once. Maybe bus to Market Basket once a month or so to stock up on cheap nonperishables.

It's going to be ridiculously inconvenient in comparison to how it used to be (I live a block from the Alewife Foodmaster) but at least there are options.

The FM on Beacon St in Somerville, while a bit far afield, has wine at 30% off now... it also ends on Saturday.

On a positive note, it sounds like a deal is in the works for another store to take over the location. No guarantee on what kind of store it will be, of course.

"The letter to employees says that the Alewife Foodmaster location is expecting to complete a transfer or sale, and that they 'expect that [employees] will have the opportunity to apply and be interviewed for positions with any buyer.'”
