With supplies from around the nation already reaching the Shore over the past several weeks, efforts are being redoubled by the Somer/Summervilles in advance of the holiday season, and to address changing needs as residents begin to clean up and reoccupy homes. In Somerville, MA, the donation drive will begin Monday, December 10th and last through Friday, December 21st. Needed items are: canned, non-perishable foods; household [cleaning] products; toiletries; baby items such as wipes and diapers; hygiene items; and pet food. Please, no clothes.

"Hurricane Sandy was a devastating storm for so many communities along the east coast, particularly along the New Jersey coastline, and in its immediate wake so many residents and employees in our community were eager to help. In speaking with Mayor Gallagher from Somerville, New Jersey, it was clear that there was a very specific need for supplies, and that we could be helpful in the weeks and months to come," said Mayor Curtatone. "In the midst of the holidays, as many of us prepare our homes and purchase gifts for our loved ones, it's important that we remember how many people are left without shelter, food, and so many other items this year. Please consider joining me in making even a small donation to victims of Hurricane Sandy, and help us make a difference in the lives of others this Christmas."

Supplies will be delivered to Somerville, NJ on Saturday, December 22nd by a delegation from Somerville, MA, and will then be distributed to residents along the Jersey Shore as necessary.

Additional holiday drives ongoing in the City of Somerville, MA include the annual Toys for Local Children drive coordinated by the Somerville Council on Aging.
Donation boxes for new, unwrapped toys are available at all municipal buildings, and will be distributed to children in Somerville families for the holiday season.

I had no idea that the west somerville police substation had found a new location, extra bonus piece of news :)

I hate to mention it, but I was in Somerville, NJ over Thanksgiving this year (my mom still lives in the next town over, where I grew up) and while there was minor flooding (equalling any "heavy storm" but nowhere near hurricaine levels) and a week-long power outtage, Somerville NJ was pretty much saved from any severe property damage. I do see that anything Somerville, NJ might not need would be distributed to the people on the coast who definitely *do* need help, so it will still help those who need it. Somerville is about an hour's drive to the nearest NJ shore area, and about 2-3 hours from the locations of greatest Hurricane Sandy devastation.

[livejournal.com profile] redcolumbine's headline seems wrong, if you read the text of the announcement - the aid is not FOR Somerville, NJ but spearheaded by Somerville NJ's mayor, who though it would be kind of cool to enlist other sister-city Somervilles.

The text of the announcement that was included here says this, though the one posted on the library door looked clearer - the aid is for Hurricane Sandy victims on the Jersey shore, not for the town of Somerville, NJ. They are just collecting it and managing the distribution of stuff to the shore by folks in Somerville, NJ.

Your headline does not match what the announcements I've seen on this drive (including the one you posted) say - Somerville NJ is looking to join up with other Somervilles to collect stuff and then to distribute it to the Jersey shore which they are within striking distance of -- they don't need it for their own residents as far as I can tell.

Thanks. Oxford Comma is just semantics, but whether you're helping the Jersey Shore or giving stuff to people making a mountain out of a molehill does seem to make a bigger difference that that :)
