It's not what you're thinking.

I am determined to find shrinky dink paper (in a brick & mortar store). I thought Michael's would have it, but the woman was completely baffled by my request. Any ideas?

I actually saw it at Michael's in December, so that's really weird.

I have seen it at Play Time in Arlington Center.

Also, at Michael's, check the scrap booking section. I think it was there the last time I went looking for it at Michael's.

Sounds like the store is better stocked than it is staffed ;-)

They should have it at Michaels. But I noticed that they have "kits" more than just the paper itself. The other place to try is Playtime in Arlington (I know they have it, but it may not be branded Shrinky Dinks). And also Benjamin Franklin in Cushing Square, Belmont.

I may have a stash if you find yourself totally stuck.

Depending on how much you need, I may have some. I think I got it at the everett michaels. It was a pack of 8-12 sheets, some opaque, some not.

Apparently you can make them out of solo cups (like, the beer pong ones...best way I can think to describe it) I'd do some research, but this information came from a reliable source who has in fact done it before!

Yes, one of the types of recycleable plastic will work like shrinky dinks when in thin clear sheets, though at the moment I don't remember which one.

... but the net helpfully tells me that it's #6 recyclable.

No. 6 is the stuff from which they make those clear plastic containers for salad bars and whatnot. So look there. My friend who did this recently also had mixed luck with #1 type, which I'm pretty sure is the stuff from which they make the bulk-nuts-and-seeds containers at Pemberton Farm.

Seconding the #6 recycable plastic thing, and adding that it's the kind of plastic used in most chinese/indian/thai/sushi/italian takeout containers. My mother made thousands of shrinkydinks for girl scouts, mostly out of these. You just have to watch them a little closer than normal since sometimes they'll try to curl up --buy a cheap spatula at the thrift store to hit them with and you'll be fine.

I saw it at ACMoore today...in the section with the Klutz books (there is a Klutz Shrinky Dink book, and refill packs)

#6 plastic is the ONLY plastic to use for homemade shrinky-dinks. I've done it a lot and from what I've read, anything else might emit dangerous fumes. I set the oven or toaster oven to something very high, like 575 or broil, let it preheat, and put it in. You'll watch it shrink, and take it out as soon as it's finished! Have fun!
