I used to go to Big Y when I lived in CT during college. Are they even up in Mass?

Yes! They are mainly in Western MA though I think I've seen a few around Central when driving around now! I grew up with one in my home town (Westfield) they had the coolest shopper loyalty programs, like the coins :)

I had thought they'd gotten that far out. Though they are definitely more centralized in Westfield, Chicopee, etc.

that location is definitely more convenient than swimming upstream to get parking at the Shaw's in Porter Sq.

This!! I have gone to Stop and Shop in place of Foodmaster a few times now and they've been great. Way better than Shaw's, and I like their store-brand stuff.

Having more supermarket choices is a good thing. However, strikebreaking and unionbusting are not such good things. I hope Stop & Shop can reach an amicable agreement with the union before the new store opens:
