ETA 2/11/13 1:40 pm: This information is outdated so I'm striking it through. The snow emergency remains in effect until further notice. See this new post.

Just got this as a robo-call and e-mail:

Hello, this is Jackie Rossetti from the City of Somerville with a storm update for Sunday, February 10th. The City's Snow Emergency will remain in effect until Monday, February 11th at 6pm, and the parking ban will continue to be enforced until that time. Vehicles parked in municipal lots will have until 8pm to be moved so that City crews may begin clean up of all school and metered parking lots.

Please remember that residents and businesses MUST shovel the sidewalks in front of your property within 6 hours after the end of a storm or will be subject to fines. Shoveling snow into the street is not permitted. Please also remember to clear vents in your home and exhaust pipes on cars to prevent carbon monoxide and fire hazards. Additionally, please assist the Somerville Fire Department by clearing paths to fire hydrants in your neighborhood to provide access in case of an emergency. We thank you for your cooperation and patience throughout this difficult storm.

For folks who have been walking around a bunch today: How well is the even side of most streets plowed? At least on my street it really isn't going to be possible to resume parking on both sides of the street yet. If it is the way it was two years ago, it is going to be pretty hard for people to find places to park once the municipal lots are no longer available.

Judging from my street, yeah, it's going to be very difficult to find enough spaces. The even side is pretty much solid snow for the width of a car. I feel very lucky that this storm happened right after I moved to a home with a driveway! Which hasn't been plowed either, but at least my car can get in and out....

Although if the storm drains aren't cleared out by then, we are probably looking at issues with flooding in a lot of places.

yes, this. also, the 2 drains near vernon & glenwood were placed so badly that water pools just in the place they aren't. :( you'd think the planners would have had the common sense to go out to the sites carrying some water so they could see which way was downhill before they started placing drains.

if the city expects there to magically be parking on both sides of the street around here, all I can say is that the towing companies are going to be doing a brisk business so the streets won't be totally blocked by desperate driveway-less people.

Beacon is more or less filled in on the entire even side of the street - the entire parking lane + bike lane/shoulder width is filled in with a good 3ft+ bank of snow. I'm hoping with the schools closed and the parking ban through tomorrow evening it gives them more time to clear it a bit. It's extremely tight with two cars trying to pass each other in opposite directions at the same time. A lot of pedestrians have been using the road because the sidewalk situation is pretty miserable unless you like pretending you're on American Gladiators. Here's hoping the rain brings down some of those insanely tall snow trenches. It's like living in a maze!
