I am planning to move into an apartment in Winter Hill, and I'm really looking forward to being so close to Davis. The place has gas heat, which we have to pay for. NStar says they provide both gas and electric service in Somerville, but it would only set up electric service for me at the new address.

NStar says they don't have time to respond to phone calls because they are so busy dealing with winter storms, so I don't know if they only provide gas service to West Somerville, and there's some other company that does Winter Hill. Or if they just can't imagine me as a gas customer, after so many years of only buying electricity from them. Or if there is actually a problem with the building I'm about to move into.

Any ideas?

I live in Ten Hills, so only a few blocks from Winter Hill. Our gas is provided by National Grid, though our electricity is provided by NStar.

Try National Grid? When we moved into West Somerville six years ago, our landlord told us that either NStar or Keyspan (now National Grid) could supply our gas/electricity. Turned out to be NStar, but maybe you're in a different zone.

Depending on where you live in Winter Hill, some of your utilities may be through Medford. We live right on the line, and it caused quite a bit of consternation getting our stuff hooked up until we realized that our street address is Somerville, but our utilities were Medford.

I lived in Medford, but my utilities all thought I was in Somerville!

I live in Winter Hill and have gas through National Grid and electric through NStar.

This. Although I just moved, but for eight years living in the Winter Hill area this was my setup. And NStar never tried to sell me their gas service, so I assumed that meant it wasn't offered in my area.

I agree with the other posters here. Your gas is most likely from National Grid and electric is from NSTAR.

I think the gas and electric are actually separate companies -- we get separate physical bills. You may have to find the number for the gas company and call them directly rather than trying to set up both at once

NStar sends me both the electric and gas bills in the same envelope each month. But I'm in Davis Square.

Huh. Mine comes in two envelopes, and I have to write checks to Nstar Gas and Nstar Electric.

I send two separate checks (well, these days I send two separate electronic payments via my bank's website), but the bills arrive together in the same envelope.

My bills come in two separate envelopes, and same for many of my friends. Has yours always come that way, or did you do something (call NStar, ?, ) to make it happen?

The two bills have been coming in the same envelope for years, and have the same due date. (Just got another one in this morning's mail.) I think it's been this way ever since Boston Edison merged with Com Gas to form NStar. I don't remember doing anything special to make this happen.

There's just one return envelope, addressed to a PO box in Dallas TX of all places. If i were still mailing checks, I'd send both of them together with the two payment stubs in this one envelope.

That was the case when I had gas and electric through NSTAR in Porter Square, and it's the case with the National Grid service where I live now. It's kind of a pain, but once you know what's going on, it's easy to sort out.

I lived in Medford in the Winter Hill area and it was National Grid for both gas and electric, but different bills, different contact info. So even though it said "National Grid" on both, it really was handled like dealing with two different companies.

Winter Hill is near Davis Square? Well, I guess if you're comparing to Newton, or Nashua, or New York...

you must have incredible walking speed. gmaps says davis to winter hill (a point on school st. between medford st. and broadway) is 33 minute walk (1.7 miles). i live on the near side of winter hill (about a mile from davis) and it still takes me 25 minutes. my definition of "near" for walking is a half-mile or less.

just calibrating for future readers who are doing the real estate dance and are being told ...extensions... of the truth by local real estate agents.

It takes me about a half hour to walk from Davis Square to my synagogue at the top of Winter Hill. Trying to do that in 20 minutes would involve a lot of running (some of it uphill).
