Now that we are in the brave new world of removing our old parking stickers, what are you guys doing to get rid of the residue that gets stuck on your windshield?

Goo Gone works great.

If it doesn't come off cleanly? Hairspray, usually. Rubbing alcohol

I have seen cars that are plastered with old Somerville parking stickers to the point where I wonder how the drivers can see out of that particular window. I suppose if you accumulate enough of them, a police officer could cite you for it.

While they're at it they should also cite the people who block their entire back window with beanie babies and stuffed animals for bad taste.

I second goo gone, let it sit and then use a razor blade to scrape it off.

They no longer go on the back window?

A standard stainless-steel razor blade will scratch the glass. If you look at snow and ice scrapers that have a metal edge, the metal edge is brass.

They haven't gone on the back window for three or four years now...

Most of the goo gone stuff you purchase now comes with a plastic scraper. :)

Razor blade made for windshield/safety glass scraping. I never needed goo-gone or any adhesive remover. You can probably get them at any hardware store; I picked up a couple at the Benjamin Moore in Ball Square.

They are supposed to be on the left front windshield, near the dashboard, as I understand it. For which I curse the Dept. of Traffic & Parking daily, as there's now an accumulating layer of goo in my peripheral vision. :(

There is also the tool that all the inspection stations use to remove the old e-check stickers...

I second the rubbing alcohol soaked on cottonballs, let it soak in a bit then rub off with your finger/wooden flat edge. Just don't get it on the paint job of the outside of your car. If it drips on your paint, wipe it away promptly.

They have said to pull the old ones since they started the drivers' side windshield ocation rather than the side window . This year's is completely opaque and covers quite a bit more area, too, so I can't imagine having more than one of them there. As it is I stuck it as low as humanly possible and it took me a week to get used to the big @#%$#%$# white rectangle in my field of view. Yes, I'm short.

Yes. I actually often go to one and ask them to use that tool for me while I'm filling up with gas.

Also, I try to stick my sticker pretty gently so it peels of easily the next year.

I also like Goof Off, which is similar to Goo Gone, but seems to work better on heavier duty jobs. I got a little can at Home Depot.

I used a razor blade to get mine off, but noticed that the handwritten sharpie ink had bled through and stained my windshield. Did that happen to anyone else?

I scrubbed with lighter fluid to get the adhesive residue and the ink off.

Pretty annoying.

Learned my lesson the first year I had a parking sticker here and couldn't easily get it off: now I turn down all four corners of the sticker to make little handles so I have something to grab to get it off. On the good years, it will come off in one go. As for the goo – I just plop the new sticker over it.

[note to self: send in the renewal form...]

I was told verbally by the person at the parking office to remove the old ones. I can understand why they would want this. I kind of enjoy the point of pride of having many years of stickers, but I can let go of that sentimentality.

The city usually sends me a renewal notice around the beginning of February for my visitor permits, which expire at the end of March. I did not get any such mailing this year. Did everyone else get it?

(I no longer have a regular resident permit since I no longer have a car)

I have always used WD40. Just spray it onto the sticker, and have some paper towels handy to catch the drips. Wait a minute or two and the WD40 does a good job disolving the glue. I use a straight edge to get under a corner, and slowly peel it off. Or use the straight edge to scrape it all off. A little extra WD40 then will disolve and remove any of the sticky residue. Clean it all up and apply the new sticker. Not a task a look forward to each year, but it works.

I use a widget blade, nail polish remover, and some Windex to properly clean before applying the new one.
