plant theft

Many of my neighbors have reported potted plants and lawn ornaments
being stolen from their front yards in the vicinity of Dave's Fresh Pasta.
(Dave's and O'leana have also apparently had plants stolen.)
Have any other people in the Davis Square area experienced
this as well? We're trying to figure out how wide-spread
this problem has become.

(I guess there are far worse crime problems to have...)

I assume that this is not related to the ferrets.

First Church, on College Ave., had a tree stolen right out from their front lawn, but that was a few years ago now. Probably not relevant to the current case, but it still appalls me, as do the recent thefts.

I'm on the Porter side of Davis, and i've had plants (and other things) stolen. Various petty theft over the years, but the plant stuff has been recent.

In the Somerville Journal, there have been several letters and articles about plant theft, specifically some noting that the plant theives are fairly discerning and garden-savvy and will take things that are rare or exciting more than things that are boring. I have had no personal experience of this though.

I'm just outside Davis, and I've had plants, pots and windowboxes stolen, ripped out and tossed in the street, and otherwise maimed and mutilated every year of the seven I've lived here.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this on the 'ways Davis Square could be improved' thread.

Who are these people?!
