WBZ radio reports that there will be NO MBTA SERVICE anywhere this morning while the manhunt for the second suspect goes on in Watertown. Residents of several towns (including Cambridge, but so far not Somerville) are being asked to stay home.

Odds on the 2nd suspect making it into custody alive?

Without complicated surrender protocols, somebody putting on an s-vest generally never takes it off again.

Has anybody gotten a city robocall to tell them that the T was shut down? It seems to me that it should be a priority to the city to get the news out....

I got three robocalls (landline and two cell phones) from Cambridge, where I live.

I finally got a call about half an hour ago. Somerville is not under a lockdown order, but police would prefer that we stay indoors anyway.

Last night we got home around 11:15 pm and an online friend told me that an MIT police officer had been shot.

I fired up the online (web) police scanner, and listened from about 11:30 - 2 am. At the time, the police were saying that the black SUV was a pickup truck, then a stolen state trooper SUV. All were told to urgently turn off their cell phones NOW. Then they said the suspects were throwing dynamite out of the car. I heard confusion as they said the suspects were on foot. Ambulances were summoned. Did they have one or two suspects in custody? Towards 2 am they were setting up a command center, but one suspect was still at large. Often they went to a different frequency so I didn't hear everything. I went to bed when the command center was set up, and they were telling the police to turn their cell phones back on, but were still searching for the last suspect (which they still are).

Strangely, I was not frightened, since this seemed to be contained in another town miles from me. I was fascinated, listening to the scanner. News reports late in the night said they had stripped the man naked before bringing him in. The police did not mention any of this, nor that the suspect was injured in any way. While I thought it might have had something to do with the Marathon bombers, nothing was said on the scanner. Good, professional work was all I heard (Well, there was one surprised but not-quite-panicked report from the time that the policeman on the chase was reporting the first explosions, suspecting it was dynamite, and in the middle of a large gun fight).

I also was online following this via scanner and twitter until about 2:30am. It was a crazy scene. As I said on twitter at the time, we should all hope that these were the Marathon bombers, because otherwise it would mean we had potentially several groups of armed maniacs running around! So in a weird way I'm glad it did turn out to all be the same people.

Ron, maybe update this post to reflect that Somerville is now asking us all to "shelter in place" even though we aren't technically part of the lockdown.
