Let the record of this forum show that Jonathan "Johnny" Monsarrat is hereby declared a rotten scoundrel. He is entirely lacking in all scruples and abilities to function within society. Such is his infamy that now bestowed upon him is the title of "village idiot" of not one, but two cities: both Cambridge and Somerville. His rancid reputation is such that even the insects in his apartment have fled to avoid his association.

Mr. Monsarrat is, as a former CEO, a lecturer, a public artist, and so forth, clearly a public figure. As his lawsuit is clearly of a public nature, and his antics are clearly of public interest, reporting on his infamy - both objective reporting and opinion editorials - are protected under the first amendment.

As such, as soon as this lawsuit is thrown out (and it will be thrown out with prejudice), an online archive will be created to document the facts about Mr. Monsarrat. This will include details of his arrest, this will include his lawsuits, and this will include the LiveJournal threads regarding him - which I have saved in full before any posts were deleted.

In addition, in any case where Mr. Monsarrat attempts to interface with the general public - be it art projects, be it lectures, be it on city properties, be it on university properties - it will be ensured that the entity involved is made fully aware of Mr. Monsarrat's repugnant past and his history of attacking respected members of the community with pathetic abuses of the judicial system.

Johnny Monsarrat - withdraw your ridiculous lawsuit or let your infamy grow further. Your scandalous attempt to turn the seventh amendment against the first will be entirely countered with a show of force of the first. If your lawsuit goes before a judge, it will be thrown out, and your threats will no longer intimidate anyone. Then you will see the community truly speak its mind.

What a great idea. The Somerville Journal would seem to be directly involved (did he sue them directly? Or just go after individuals he thought he could intimidate?) The Boston Globe should be interested, because it says such interesting things about free speech, but I don't know how one goes about getting their attention.

Now that the Popehat signal has gone up, it might be a bit easier to get this issue some publicity.

Just don't approach any FOX outlets. They might side against the damn hippies on the intertubes out of reflex.

The "Contact the Boston Globe (http://services.bostonglobe.com/aboutus/contact_us/default.aspx)" and "Contact Boston.com (http://www.boston.com/help/bostoncom_info/?p1=Foot_ContactBostoncom_Contact)" links would probably be a good place to start.

The "Newsroom Services" item on the Boston Globe contact page linked above even gives an e-mail address for submitting tips.

According to this self-serving press release, Johnny's current company Hard Data Factory is located in the Boston Globe building, as part of the Globe's business incubator.

I suppose this is one way to test the Boston Globe's objectivity. If they don't cover it one might approach Fox by describing it as a story the liberal media won't cover

one might approach Fox

Given Jonmon's tendencies toward sleazy behavior, I think Fox would be interested if the Globe didn't show much interest in the story...

Then the Herald should love this story.

The other named defendant is Deb Filcman, who was editor of the Somerville Journal at the time of her two allegedly defamatory blog posts. I talked to the current editor, Dan Atkinson, but he seems totally disinclined to discuss the case with me or even to write a news article about it.

Filcman now works for the communications office of Brandeis University.

he may have been advised by legal counsel to not comment on it publicly at all. writing about a case where one of his staff (or former staff) could represent a rather messy conflict of interest and it might be better for him to avoid the topic altogether.

*sidles up to this post* Psst, you want contacts? I got contacts. I know people. *chews on toothpick*

But seriously, I'm reaching out to my friends in print/e-journalism. I also, somehow, have @bostondotcom following me on twitter, so I've shot them a direct message with the link.

Let's see if it can gain some traction.

I think the positions of Village Idiot of Cambridge and Village Idiot of Somerville are pretty hotly contested -- I'm not sure they can both be awarded to this guy at the same time.

but surely under these extreme circumstances we can make an exception.
