CRUMPETS

I know this is a bit of an insane request, but I'm having trouble finding something. I really really really want some properly delicious british-style crumpets. And alas, I can't find any stores in the Davis Sq area that carry them. I've seen gross "english muffiny" things that claimed to be crumpets but very much weren't. And one bakery tried to sell me regular muffins as crumpets. And another confused crumpets and scones. So my question is....

Where can I get delicious crumpets in the Davis area?

Oh my...I've seen them at Cardullo's in Harvard Square, but that's the closest place I can think of.

You can get adequate ones at Porter Star. But Porter Star has bad juju and should be avoided at all costs otherwise.

There is no reasonable explanation for why shopping there is so unpleasant. The bizarre aisles and massive crowds don't explain it. So it must be something supernatural.

Heh. Supermarket ghouls!

So where do you do your shopping?

Beacon Street Star, a couple more minutes down the road (and The Harvest in Central for some things). It's smaller with fewer choices, but much more pleasant.

Have to check that second Star out. I find that going at off-peak times makes shopping anywhere far more pleasant.

Good point.

Go away, wicked crowds. For the beloved not-so-crappy Star Market doesn't have Polar Orange Dry in cans or Salt and Vinegar Pringles, so as you can see it is dreadful and you should stay away from it. We will bear the torture for you, as we are Chivalrous and Good.

I've noticed this too! The lighting and the highly unpleasant parking lot have been tossed around as theories, but there's just something more inherently wrong with the place.

See, bad juju, just like I said! I think it was built on an Indian Burial Ground, and periodically the cashiers' heads spin around and the vomit pea soup.

Not to rain on everyone's parade, but I have a suggestion - It's just poorly managed!

Anybody with even a functioning brain stem would know that at around 5:00-7:00 every day, the masses will come home on the T or in their cars, and before going to their homes in Porter/Davis (one of the most densely populated areas EVER :) they will want groceries.

Somehow, this little tidbit escapes them, and rather than having their staff man the registers so we can all get our Ben & Jerry's, hamburger buns and pickles and GO HOME they run 2 or 3 registers and allow lines of ridiculous proportions to build up.

That, and they've had some of the most patently rude and evil cashiers I've ever seen in my life.

But yeah, I agree, it's also bad juju :)

Glad to know I'm not the only one who feels that way! The new Shaws in Twin Cities Plaza is nice. :)

I don't know if they're proper or not, but Trader Joe's has them.

Is your userpic from the was-school-now-Cambridge-main-library on Broadway?

Yes it is! Aren't those little sculptures unexpected?

Yes!

I read about them in a book on public art, titled something like Placemakers, looking at art that worked to make a place more distinctively itself, rather than yet another strip mall or whatever.

Not cheap, but tasty.

Don't know about Davis Square. You can probably find some at Cardullo's in Harvard Square though.

Surprisingly, Soundbites. At least I like them, give it a try! No need to wait in those ridiculous lines either (if you go on a busy day), just walk right up to the counter.

they have crumpets, and english devon cream, at tealuxe. there is a tealuxe in harvard square, but the food options there are limited- the one near copley definitely has the crumpets. they're quite tasty.
