I'd really like to get a group of friends together and make s'mores before the summer ends, but since we're all apartment dwellers without access to grills, I'm not sure how to do it.

In my very suburban youth, there were a few parks with grills anyone could use, but I haven't seen anything like that around here (yet). Does anyone know of anywhere accessible by public transit conducive to marshmallow roasting? Fire pits would be preferred, but grills are good, too!

Danehy Park has grills, but you need to be a Cambridge resident to reserve them. Are any of your party Cambridge residents?

This may or may not be helpful but you can buy, for $6-$16 a disposable grill can be yours. It's a one-use thing but works on any given slab of concrete or asphalt. Seen here: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=223117&catid=185744&aid=338666&aparam=goobase_filler&device=c&network=g&matchtype= and at CVS in Porter last summer.

Also, you can use grills at George's Island in the Harbor. It's a bit of a haul but technically public transit and it's very pretty.

It's all very illegal, but well nigh everyone grills in their yards or on their porches or in their driveways around here.

Given the number of fires we've had in Somerville over the past three months, please don't grill on your porch or on anything else that is attached to your house.

How many of those recent fires were due to grills? Fires from charcoal grills are relatively rare, most grill fires are from mechanical failure of gas grills, usually the gas supply lines breaking off and the propane tank igniting.

Also, the last time I downloaded the fire code, grills were not against the code on porches. Portable cookers were illegal on porches or within a few feet of structures, so anything permanent is technically legal.

Not exactly what you are esking for, nor is it the least expensive thing, but fairly novel, there's a restaurant near Copley called Max Brenner. They specialize in chocolatey desserts (though they have normal food and drinks too). One of the desserts is "urban smores" where they give you graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate fondue, raspberry jam, a wooden stick and a small fire. You just sit there (we were outside at the time) and roast your own marshmallows and make your own s'mores. Again, not the cheapest solution, but still pretty fun.

This is probably not hugely helpful, but if you feel like taking a short road trip to make smores, the Vandenburg Esplanade along "the Boulevahd" (aka 113, along the Merrimack roughly between the School St. and Rourke bridges) in Lowell has those little freestanding grills that I remember from parks when I was a kid. So does the campground part of the state park at Salisbury Beach.
