Can any of you recommend a good place in the area, where a newcomer might buy a mattress or futon for a reasonable price and have it delivered fairly soon? My new housemate is not on LJ, and is about to go to sleep on my couch. He will be shopping without a car, when the buses are on a holiday schedule, though he can get to Wellington and Lechmere almost as easily as Davis.

Thinking of being without a car, do any of you know of a good place to get an inexpensive bike for basic short-distance commuting and hauling small amounts of cargo? Perhaps secondhand?

We've bought twice from Mike at Watertown Mattress, and recommend the experience highly. He knows his stock, goes to great lengths to find the right mattress for you, and bends his prices nearly until they break. Last time we went, he forgot to charge us for the frame, and said, "Look, my daughter will come with me on this delivery. Just give her a nice tip and we're even." He's very flexible about delivery times, too, and you get a free performance of the Mike Show with every visit.

Accessible via the 70 bus from Central.

I will second Watertown Mattress, and add that I got to experience Therone, the other manager (so no Mike Show for me). I found him congenial and respectful, he listened to my needs and helped me find something that fit well within them, and charged me a more-than-reasonable total amount for everything, including delivery. I only bought mine yesterday, so I won't be able to speak to the quality of delivery until today or tomorrow, but everything else was lovely.

My only complaint --the 70 goes directly there, but biking was merely an "okay" trip (no bike lanes on a lot of the trip for me, coming straight south from Powderhouse) and there was nowhere to park my bike. But that's nothing to do with the place exactly, just the location it's in.

I got mine from Dream On Futon in Inman Square. I picked it up with [livejournal.com profile] audioboy and [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel, but they also deliver.

Has he found a mattress? I hadn't realized he wasn't bringing one—or is he waiting for his stuff to arrive?

He found a mattress and got it delivered yesterday, so he's all set.

Glad to hear it.

Another place that does delivery within a day or two is sleep-arama in Porter square. The guy who works there is a bit over friendly, but isn't pushy like a lot of sales guys.
When we bought a tempurpedic (which has nationally set prices) he just added free stuff (pillows, mattress cover, delivery) to it instead of marking it down.

i got my bed there over ten years ago and its still great. they delivered it fedEx for free.
and you don't need to get the super thick ones that cost more. the only downside is that
they are hard to move because they're so heavy and floppy.

yeah, it was definitely an investment. I got 3 layers of latex - but 2 would be fine. it didn't smell - i got the 100% talahey. and they sent me samples so i could decide what kind of firmness i wanted. plus dust mites don't live in latex - so its great for those, like myself, with mite/dust allergies. the latex is starting to degrade around the edges where the zipper is - i guess more air gets in through there - but i think i've had the bed going on almost 15 years - so not so bad - and no depressions.

Basics between Harvard and Central delivered a couch we bought. They offered same day delivery.

Bike Boom in Davis has used bikes. I liked their selection, but I ended up with a different bike from The Bicycle Exchange in Porter.

This one might be a bit away from you, but it's where I got my bike.
