Somerville Diaper Drive September 14-29

Did you know you can't buy diapers with food stamps or get them through WIC (Women, Infants, and Children)? Many families struggle to afford the $100 per month it costs to buy diapers, and babies sitting in soiled diapers for extended periods of time leads to both stressed chlidren and parents.

The Somerville Moms (and Dads!) Yahoo Listserv Group has therefore decided to host a diaper drive to benefit the Somerville WIC program! The Somerville WIC office will screen applicants so the diapers go to those that need them most.

Maybe the Somerville WIC can help these applicants buy diapers via Amazon. A monthly supply is under $50.

I think $100 a month is pretty excessive, even without Amazon and a computer. Target sells diapers in large boxes (120-180 diapers per box depending on size) for $27 per box, you can get there on a bus without a credit card, and in my experience a box or a box and a half a month is not an unreasonable amount to go through (tiny babies = more diapers per box and more frequent diaper changes, older babies = fewer diapers per box and less frequent diaper changes.) Or maybe my kids were sitting in soiled diapers for extended periods of time even though budget was not my prime consideration. ;-)

But on the same token, $27 buys a brand new box of diapers for someone who doesn't have that $27 all in one lump (and the same number of diapers bought in smaller boxes wold cost more, of course), and I sure won't argue against helping financially struggling families with diapers.
