I was just looking something up regarding Kaya, the Korean/Sushi restaurant in Porter Square, and it looks like it closed about a month ago. Rumors on the internet report there will be a hotel built there, with possibly a restaurant on the first level, possibly keeping the name Kaya. (and then further digging showed this had been discussed and planned as far back as 2008?). Anyways, I don't remember reading anything about it here, so thought I'd mention it.

It also leads me to another question. any suggestions for good Korean nearby-ish? (I think the place in Union Square that I liked also closed).

I saw that hotel news recently, which made me wonder (assume) that the proposed Davis hotel project is therefore off.

If anything, I'd say Cambridge getting a hotel that close to our border will fuel the Mayor's competitive jets and make him fire even harder for his own. :(

This has been a periodic topic of discussion on the Porter Square Neighborhood Association mailing list for several years now. It is totally unrelated to any possible Davis Square hotel.

I think Koreana in Cambridge (which has been there for ages) and Manna House in Arlington (which finally gave up on the sushi sideline and is concentrating on their Korean food, which imho was much better anyway) are both worth a try.

If the Korean restaurant in Union Square that you like is Buk Kyung then, no, it's not closed. I've eaten there recently (and it was good).

I'm not an expert in Korean food quality, but one of the Porter Exchange restaurants is Korean, and the 2nd floor Japanese place in the Staples building in Harvard Square had Korean dishes.

I think a place selling Korean and Japanese food is more likely to be run by Koreans than Japanese. Japanese food is more popular and/or supports higher menu prices, while I don't know why your average Japanese restaurant would have any interest in selling Korean food.

Another place in the Exchange is a ramen store with a Hong Kong waitress (when I was there) and Spanish speaking Hispanics doing the cooking. A Japanese place in Bloomington had Chinese behind the counter.

A bit further afield (though bus-able from Davis): Chung Ki Wa. I was suspicious at first because of the "Japanese/Korean," but the Korean menu is fairly extensive (and if you want table-grilled meat, they've got a decent assortment of that too). And if my picky Korean husband says it's good and makes remarks like "they even serve the right kind of tea!", I'll trust him that it's fairly authentic.

Ooh...I really need to check out more of the restaurants in Medford Sq. Bumping this one to the top of my list.

I second this recommendation. We normally eat from the Korean menu (though they have a great sashimi rice bowl dish on the Japanese menu). BBQ is a treat, but they have a lot of nice comfort food that is less expensive. I love their chapchae.

I will add another voice for Chung Ki Wa.
