New Rules

The following are the new rules for [livejournal.com profile] davis_square. Feel free to critique them.

All posts should have something to do with Davis Square or the immediately surrounding areas.

Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, sizism, and similar intolarances have no place here.

All advertisements must be placed behind an <lj-cut> tag. The entire post should be cut, leaving nothing outside. The link text in the <lj-cut text="link text"> tag should briefly describe the nature of the advertisement. Any post that includes an invitation to exchange money, services, and/or property will be considered an advertisement for the purposes of the rules.

Each user is limited to one advertising post a week. If you need to advertise more than one thing, consolidate it into one post.

Multiple images, images over 500 pixels in height and/or width, and lengthy posts should be behind an <lj-cut> tag.

In the rare case that there is non-worksafe material relevant to the community, it should be posted behind an <lj-cut> tag.

Nifty. Thanks!

I wonder if it is worth having something
discouraging cross-posting?

because the same people will still post the same lame ad to davis_square, b0st0n, diesel_cafe, all the boston* groups that are remotely related to davis square in some way.

I really wish there were a livejournal feature to filter out an individual user.

well, there isn't an easy way to do that, but assuming you're a paid user using s2, it is possible to implement something into your style that, if x given user posts to a community you've friended, you can force an lj-cut onto your viewing of their post.

it's a slight modification of the meme-cutter tutorial here; but the replacement code is as such:

function contains_advert(string content) : bool {
var string[] ljads = [ "exampleuser", "anotheruser"];
foreach var string ljad ($ljads) {
if ($content->contains($ljads)) { return true; }
}
return false;
}

and then:

if (contains_advert($e.poster.username)) {
"""<br /><b>( <a href="$e.permalink_url">probably an ad</a> )</b><br />""";
}

cross-posting isn't so much an issue if the big ads are behind cuts? i dunno: I unsubbed from a few communities because of all the cross-posting. i figured i was getting enough info just being on the major ones, so it's hard for me to say how much a nuisance it still is.

Thanks! Especially the rule about making the cut text explanatory. There have been a few where the cut text just said something like "whee" and I didn't know whether to follow, and then it was an ad.

...and marked as non-worksafe.

Is it possible to add Tags to a community? That way when someone is looking for a dry cleaner they can find it rather than ask the same question again?

The only other thing that occurs to me would be to ask people to not use non-work-safe user pictures as well. (Since, er, someone did a few week ago, I think.)

I'd suggest adding hetero and biphobia to the list. As a gay man, who is also a jerk, I (and those like me) should be prohibited from engaging in the aforementioned behavior in this community.

Wow. A whole manefesto about posting...for Davis Square Live Journal. Really? Seems a bit odd to me. Isn't the whole purpose to have an open exchange regarless of whether or not you agree with the person or want to buy what they're trying to sell?

I just hope this posting isn't against the new rules.
