"Another Joshua Tree location in Somerville's Davis Square will remain open, according to Arcari. Some of the 50 employees from the Allston location now work at the Somerville spot, others were laid off."

and it looks like the Allston one is being replaced with a grocery store, maybe a Trader Joe's. Wish that could happen here ...

Any chance McKinnon's could be convinced to carry produce/whatever else is missing? It seems more likely than getting another small grocery to open in Davis.

McKinnon's already has a small but quite decent produce section with prices the same or lower than Shaws/Star.

I think that the main disadvantage to McKinnon's, other than the objectionable-to-some historic butcher shop smell, is that it isn't open much past 5pm.

Smells better than it used to since they renovated and took up the blood soaked carpet (seriously, carpet). Or maybe I have become acclimated (shudder). The deli guys there are nice.

5 or 5:30pm used to be a thing, but they have been open until 7pm Mon-Sat for a while now. 5pm on Sundays.

If Trader Joe's wants to move in to Davis, they don't need the Joshua Tree to close down. The Social Security building is vacant, thanks to Gewirtz.

McKinnon's produce is hit-or-miss in my experience. They keep the potatoes and onions - two items which should always be stored in the dark - in the front window, so their shelf life is very limited. I think they would do well to offer some organic items (meats and produce), but for them to expand any of their offerings in any category would require more space.

I've heard (total rumor, unconfirmed, would appreciate feedback from anyone in-the-know) that their lease is up within the year, and I worry that they won't be able to stay due to rent hikes or whatever.
