The North Cambridge Family Opera is again assembling a chorus of
children and adults to perform as part of the Cambridge Science
Festival. This is a wonderful opportunity for adults and young
people to sing together.
Our family has participated in the science festival chorus with the North Cambridge
Family Opera for several years, and it's a lot of fun if you like science, or singing, or both!
It's in neighboring Cambridge but rehearsals are quite convenient from the Davis Square area, at
the Peabody School on Rindge Ave near Porter Square.
Short form:
it's a multigenerational chorus for both kids and adults
We sing original songs about science in multi part harmony
kids 5-11 should have an adult participating, teens and adults don't need a kid chaperone.
attend an open rehearsal January 28 and/or February 4, 6-7:30pm
continue Tuesday evenings from February through April
sing in two concerts at the end of April (the last weekend of school vacation week.)
Full details behind the cut.
This year's performance is a science oratorio by contemporary
British composer David Haines:
Powers of Ten
Powers of Ten explores the scales of the universe, from sub-atomic
to cosmic. It is based on the movie of the same name by Charles and
Ray Eames. The 18 songs include a jazzy piece about black holes, a
beautiful song about the Tamar River valley, and a round about the
planets of the solar system. The performances will be presented with
narration and an accompanying slideshow of children’s artwork and lyrics.
David Haines has written many of the works sung by our previous Science
Festival Choruses, as well as The Puzzle Jigs, a family opera performed by
NCFO in 2003 and 2008. Powers of Ten was performed previously by the
NCFO Festival Chorus in 2008, and both the chorus and the audience loved it.
It was also selected to open the first USA Science and Engineering Festival
on 10/10/10!
We are now recruiting singers for the 2014 NCFO Festival Chorus.
- Anyone age 5 and older can participate.
- Children ages 5 to 11 require a participating adult.
- Rain Dance participants may also sing in Powers of Ten if they wish;
rehearsals and performances for the two productions will not conflict.
Laura Backley will direct the chorus, with assistance from David Bass and
Craig Burket.
Rehearsals will be at the Peabody School, 70 Rindge Ave, Cambridge.
- Open rehearsals and registration:
Tuesday January 28, 2014, 6:00 to 7:30 PM
Tuesday February 4, 2014, 6:00 to 7:30 PM
- Weekly rehearsals: Tuesdays, February through April, 6:00 to 7:30 PM
There will be two performances scheduled for the last weekend of school
vacation week:
- Saturday April 26 at 3:00pm at the Peabody School
- Sunday April 27 at 5:00pm at the Museum of Science
