Due to the Floating Slab Project, buses will replace Red Line trains between Harvard Square and Alewife Stations in both directions from start to end of service during the following weekends:

- Saturday, April 5, through Sunday, April 6
- Saturday, April 12, through Sunday, April 13
- Saturday, April 26, through Sunday, April 27

Unfortunately, there will be 5 or 6 more such weekends later in 2014.

More details at MBTA.com

In the "glass half full department" ... free shuttle bus to Harvard!

Yeah, if you're only going as far as Harvard and it's on one of those weekends, you get a free bus trip. (I am guessing that ridership on the 96 bus goes down a fair bit on those weekends, too.)

Pretty much, anytime the MBTA uses a shuttle, they don't charge for the shuttle, and depending on where in the route, they may not charge to enter the subway coming off the shuttle. Obviously, they charge at Harvard, but if it is somewhere in the middle of the line, they don't have an easy way to segregate those who are entering the system at that station and those who paid at the other end of the system and are continuing their ride in that direction.

So, in keeping with T SOP, they simply wave everyone into the station without paying.

Ugh. Arrgh. And not, it's not an April Fool's joke--there are signs in Red Line stations.

Unless, of course, the T itself is playing the joke, but I think that would require more coordination than the T is capable of. *snark*

Well, feh. But if they have to do it, let's just get it done now.

(And I do appreciate it when the MBTA gives a reason for why there has to be an outage.)

My experience with this last time (which was admittedly 5 years ago or so) was that besides the bus part being free they would leave the gates open at harvard because otherwise there'd be a logjam (this might only be during busier times) and if you are only going from somewhere in the alewife to harvard zone, it's actually a lot faster due to the very frequent buses required to keep up. There is little to complain about here unless you really enjoy complaining.

Or if you have a hard time getting around, so transferring from bus to train an extra time is difficult.

Has the T made any announcements about how much work is left on this project?

This presentation from 2012 (http://www.mbta.com/uploadedfiles/About_the_T/T_Projects/T_Projects_List/Harvard%20to%20Alewife.pdf) implies that work will continue through 2017.
